OTTAWA, September 19, 2023 – In preparation for the Senate’s return, the Progressive Senate Group (PSG) hosted an expert panel to gain a deeper understanding of Canada’s housing crisis. “Adequate housing is a human rights issue and must be accessible to all Canadians,” said Senator Jane Cordy, Leader of the Progressive Senate Group. “That’s why the Progressive Senate Group is listening to housing experts and exploring policy options.”

Progressive senators heard from Dr. Ricardo Tranjan, Senior Researcher at the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives; Mike Moffat, Assistant Professor at Western University and Senior Director of Policy and Innovation at the Smart Prosperity Institute; and Marie-Josée Houle, Canada’s Federal Housing Advocate. Their comments and suggestions will help generate ideas and guide thorough analysis of any government-proposed legislative measures to address the housing crisis.

The Progressive Senate Group is a group of independent senators committed to a reformed Senate, equality amongst senators, Charter values, diversity, reconciliation, climate action, and policies directed towards sustainable, inclusive, and shared prosperity in Canada. Their philosophy is inspired by “Mamidosewin,” the Algonquin/Ojibwe word for “Meeting place” or “Walking together.”
