Hon. Brian Francis: Honourable senators, it’s my pleasure to join the other leaders as we welcome new senators to our chamber.

We are a different group now than in June, when we last met. Through several retirements, as well as the tragic and untimely passing of Senator Lewis, we have lost some important voices. But the work does not stop, so neither can we. It feels fitting that we are marking our return to Ottawa by celebrating the gaining of new voices and new perspectives as we welcome four new senators to our chamber.

Senator Ouellette, as a fellow Atlantic Canadian, your reputation certainly precedes you. Your dedication to medical advances, your focus on innovation and your deep commitment to improving the lives of Canadians are all strengths that will continue to serve you well in this new chapter. Welcome.

Senator Tucker, your demonstrated leadership is commendable. Few accountants are also described as innovative or creative, but these are terms that are frequently found alongside your name.

On a personal level, your commitment to constructive actions in the name of reconciliation has been exemplary. Thank you and welcome.

Senator Martel, as has been noted, your experiences in the other place will certainly come in handy as you navigate your new role here. I believe your hockey background will be just as important. You understand that though we may sometimes play for different teams, our goals are the same. We are all here to do our job; we fight hard when it matters but also practise good sportsmanship.

Senator Pitfield, you also arrive here with a unique perspective on government and Parliament, as well as the Senate. I should note that this place may look a little different than when you were last here, but I suspect your experience with artificial intelligence, digital innovation and technology will be most welcome. It seems like a very timely moment to have your expertise. Welcome.

As you may have already realized, you will all be hitting the ground running. Learning the ins and outs of this institution is not easy, nor does it come quickly. But I can assure you that you are not alone. We are all here to help, whether that means explaining procedures and practices or simply directing you to the right committee room.
