Ottawa, June 3, 2026 — Yesterday, the Senate of Canada adopted a motion introduced by Senator Gerba to officially recognize May 25 as World Africa Day in Canada. This decision marks an important step in recognizing the contributions of African and Afro-descendant communities to Canadian society.

The purpose of the motion is to invite the Government of Canada to officially recognize May 25 as World Africa Day and include it in the national calendar, alongside other officially recognized commemorative days.

Senator Gerba also noted that “More than 1.4 million Canadians have African roots or are of African descent. Through their work, commitment, and leadership, they contribute every day to the vitality of our society”.

The senator emphasized that this recognition comes within a broader context, as Canada adopted its first Africa Strategy in 2025. According to her, World Africa Day would send a “clear message of openness, respect, and recognition”, while also providing “an opportunity to educate and raise awareness” about the history and richness of the African continent.

By adopting this motion, the Senate is expressing its support for African and Afro-descendant communities, as well as for a continent whose importance to Canada’s future continues to grow.
