Ottawa, June 11, 2025 – Yesterday, Senator Pierre Moreau gave a speech at second reading in the Upper Chamber on Bill S-219, an Act respecting Judicial Independence Day.
The purpose of this bill is to designate January 11 of each year as a National Day of Recognition of the fundamental importance of an independent judiciary in Canada.
In his speech, Senator Moreau stressed that judicial independence is not an abstract principle, but a cornerstone of our democracy. He reiterated that “We must remember the importance of judicial independence and through it our attachment to the rule of law, which guarantees the permanence of the institutions of a free society.”
Bill S-219 proposes to officially dedicate a day to raising public awareness of the essential role played by judges and the judiciary in protecting fundamental rights, preserving the separation of powers, and ensuring fair and impartial justice for all. Public trust is essential to the authority of the courts.
In a world where democratic institutions are being challenged, Canada must reaffirm its commitment to a strong, competent, and independent judiciary, and to the Rule of law.
