Ottawa, May 29, 2025 – Yesterday, Senator Amina Gerba officially reintroduced in the Senate Bill S-215, An Act to Respecting National Immigration Month. This important initiative proposes to designate the month of November as a time of national celebration to recognize and highlight the vital contributions of immigrants to Canada’s development.

“Immigrants are Canada’s past, present, and future,” stated Senator Gerba, who is championing the bill with conviction. “Through National Immigration Month, we want to remind everyone that nearly all of us came from somewhere else, and that each and every person has contributed, in their own way, to the prosperity and diversity that define our country.”

Bill S-215 is the result of extensive consultations with over 30 organizations representing immigrant communities across Canada, all of which unanimously expressed their support for the initiative. Senator Gerba also emphasized the relevance of the month of November, which notably includes National Francophone Immigration Week and marks the adoption, on November 1, 2001, of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act.

“At a time when xenophobic rhetoric seeks to question the value of immigration, it is essential to reaffirm that immigration is a key economic, social, and cultural driver,” added Senator Gerba. “This bill is a call for unity and openness — a tribute to all generations of immigrants who have helped shape our shared history.”
