OTTAWA, September 21, 2023 – In preparation for the Senate’s return, the Progressive Senate Group (PSG) hosted an expert panel that advocated for underrepresented communities. “An important element of our work as senators is to give voice to underrepresented groups,” said Senator Amina Gerba, member of the Standing Senate Committee on Human Rights. “This engaging discussion reminded us all that there is so much at stake.”

Progressive senators heard from Jennifer Boyce, Director of Communications & Marketing at Egale Canada; Kate Butler, President and Chair of the Canadian Coalition for the Rights of Children; and Aviva Basman, President of the Canadian Association of Refugee Lawyers. Their comments and suggestions will help guide senators in their questioning of committee witnesses, examination of legislation and proposals for items to be studied by the Senate.

The Progressive Senate Group is a group of independent senators committed to a reformed Senate, equality amongst senators, Charter values, diversity, reconciliation, climate action, and policies directed towards sustainable, inclusive, and shared prosperity in Canada. Their philosophy is inspired by “Mamidosewin,” the Algonquin/Ojibwe word for “Meeting place” or “Walking together.”
