Ottawa, June 9, 2026 — The Senate of Canada today passed Bill S-215, the National Immigration Month Act, which officially designates the month of November as National Immigration Month in Canada.
For Senator Amina Gerba, who introduced the bill, its adoption represents a lasting recognition of the vital role immigration has played in the country’s history and development.
“By passing Bill S-215, we are sending a clear and unequivocal message: that Canada fully recognizes the essential contribution of immigration to its development, celebrates the richness of its diversity, and strengthens social cohesion through recognition and the duty of remembrance.”
The bill aims to create an opportunity for reflection, awareness, and recognition of the contributions that immigrants make to Canadian society.
“The goal is to create an annual space where we can collectively reflect on the place of immigration in our society, highlight the contributions of immigrants, and foster a better understanding of the issues surrounding the welcoming, integration, and retention of newcomers.”
Senator Gerba also noted that, with the exception of Indigenous peoples, the vast majority of Canadians are descended from immigrants. This shared reality constitutes a powerful source of social cohesion and mutual understanding.
The bill must still be adopted by the House of Commons and receive Royal Assent before it becomes law.
